Sarasota Judge Selected To Lead The State’s DUI Adjudication Lab

There is no bigger hot spot for the issues surrounding breath tests in DUI cases than Sarasota, Florida. Defense Attorneys in this part of the state have had great success in having 100’s of breath tests excluded due to the Intoxilyzer machines utilized in the area. It has been very frustrating for prosecutors in these DUI cases. With so much information coming from this part of the state it seemed to make perfect sense that Sarasota County Judge Kimberly Carlton Bonner was selected to spend the next three years leading the state’s DUI Adjudication Lab, according to the Sarasota Herald Tribune’s Todd Ruger.

The lab is set up to educate Florida judges about DUI cases. Included is an intensive week-long course with judges that examines all issues related to traffic DUI cases. For the first time that course took place in Sarasota and among…

Toyota Working On Device That Will Block Drunk Drivers From Starting Their Cars

Japanese car manufacturer Toyota announced that it was developing an anti-drunk driving system to install in vehicles that could possibly lock the ignition. That follows news that Nissan Motors is working on similar equipment. Both manufacturers are trying to capitalize on a trend in the U.S. where states are passing laws requiring this type of equipment in the vehicles of convicted drunk drivers.

Toyota’s system is a hand-held breath test machine that is also equipped with a camera. The device measures alcohol consumption and photograph’s the driver’s face for identification purposes. The driver can either be warned or if the level of intoxication is high enough the ignition can be locked. Tests of the system are currently being run with truck maker Hino Motors.

After Tragic Drunk Driving Accident, New York Is Re-Thinking Its DUI Laws

New York is considering making it a felony to drive drunk with a child in the vehicle and adding new requirements to first time DUI offenders which may include interlock devices being installed after a first DUI conviction. According to the New York Times, the bill with the toughened laws could be on the governor’s desk any day. The only other state that makes DUI with a child in the car a felony is Arizona.

The bill comes on the heels of two highly publicized drunk driving crashes that killed children in New York. The first was the most widely known where a woman drove the wrong way on a highway and killed eight people including four young children. The second came in Manhattan when an 11-year-old girl was killed in a one car accident due to an alleged drunk driver.
