Florida DUI Checkpoint – The FHP Will Have A DUI Checkpoint Set Up IN Pasco County Friday

TampaBay.com is reporting that the Florida Highway Patrol will set up a Pasco County DUIcheckpoint Friday night from 7:00 p.m. – 3:00 a.m. The Pasco County Sheriff’s office will join other law enforcement agencies in an attempt to arrest drunk drivers and drivers under the influence of drugs.

The checkpoint will be on U.S. Highway 41 and Hale Road. They will not only be looking for drunk drivers but also checking for drivers without proper insurance information or registrations. New Port Richey Man Arrested For First DUI Despite Driving Drunk For Past 20 Years

A New Port Richey man made quite the exclamation to police Saturday night. According to Florida Highway Patrol troopers and the St. Pete Times Daniel Joseph Mahoney admitted to cops that he had never been caught driving drunk despite drinking and driving for the past 20 years. Well now he has. Mahoney was charged with two counts of DUI with property damage, DUI and hit and run involving property damage.

Troopers found Mahoney sitting on his car after striking a pole by a Publix Supermarket. According to the FHP, Mahoney drove off with a broken axle. The 40-year-old failed field sobriety tests and took a breathalyzer. His blood alcohol level registered at 0.162 and 0.157. He was taken to Land O’Lakes Jail and released.

Florida Gator Carlos Dunlap Pleads Guilty To A DUI Charge In A Gainesville Courtroom, Gets Probation

Former Florida Gator defensive end Carlos Dunlap has pled guilty to  DUI in a Gainesville court and received the minimum mandatory sentence according to a story at GatorSports.com. Dunlap’s  drunk driving incident will land him on probation for one year and he will also face a six-month driver’s license suspension. On top of that there will be community service hours and fines incorporated into his DUI sentence.

The guilty plea for  driving under the influence stems from a December 1 arrest. At the time of the traffic stop Dunlap reportedly failed field sobriety tests and had trouble maintaining his balance. He refused a breath test. Police officers initiated their DUI investigation after Dunlap was spotted asleep at the wheel on a Gainesville street.

New Drunk Driving Laws Now Some Of The Toughest In The Nation

In a response to two tragic DUI crashes involving mothers and children, New York State enacted some of the nation’s toughest drunk driving laws this week. The bill in New York makes it an automatic felony to drive drunk with a child under 16 in the car. Violators will be subject to a sentence of up to four years in prison, even for first time offenders. The bill also calls for interlock ignition devices for convicted offenders.

DUI laws in Florida are not nearly as stringent as these, but New York may be setting a precedent other states follow. According to the report on the CBS News website, the number of women arrested for DUI is up 29% over the last 10 years. They also reported that women driving drunk that were involved in fatal accidents were three times more likely to have a child under 14 in…
